Red Crown Mills

This replica of the Red Crown Mills, one of Albany's early industries, was constructed in 2004 by West Albany high school student Don Gillham as an Eagle Scout project. The diorama took Gillham and his fellow troop members 340 man-hours to build. The model, 44 by 50 inches by 30 inches tall, is made of cedar, plaster of Paris, leather dye and pine. Gillham used photographic archives and historical documents to create the model. He donated the finished project to the Albany Regional Museum.

The actual mill was built in 1881 and remained in operation along the Willamette River at
225 N. Thurston Street until is was destroyed by fire in 1947. This photograph of the actual
Red Crown Mills is believed to have been taken prior to 1920.
